What Is a Sensory Processing Disorder?
Children who can’t always process certain sensory signals may be diagnosed with a sensory processing disorder (SPD). RISE Pediatric Therapies (RPT) helps children with sensory processing differences build confidence through effective coping techniques. Contact us for more information and review our How To Get Started page. With locations in Nampa and Boise, we serve the surrounding areas of Southwest Idaho. For your convenience, we are in network with several insurance providers and also accept private pay.
Sensory Integration Disorder Can Involve Several Systems of the Body
A child or adult who has this disorder can experience a disconnect in detecting, modulating, interpreting, and /or responding to sensory experiences of the following sensory systems (Passarello, 2024):
- Auditory
- Visual
- Vestibular
- Touch
- Multisensory
- Taste
- Smell
People may over-respond or under-respond to sensory input. They may also crave sensory stimulation and seek it out. These exaggerated responses or “freeze” responses to stimuli are often inappropriate to the stimuli and can cause safety issues. SPDs are linked to several neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly autism spectrum disorder (Passarello, 2024).
Children’s Sensory Therapy
At RISE Pediatric Therapies, we’ve found occupational therapy to be beneficial to children with sensory issues. It teaches them how to respond appropriately to the stimulation. Of course, the therapy will look different for each one as we focus on the activities and stimuli that trigger the child. Our therapist will then work on helping the child respond appropriately.
