Autism Characteristics
Since autism is a spectrum disorder, the type and severity of symptoms vary widely from person to person. However, symptoms often include some of the following:
- Wandering mind when people are talking
- Avoiding eye contact
- Speech/language delay
- Loss of words or regression
- Echolalia and scripting
- Differences in interacting with others
- Difficulty understanding and describing emotions
- Dominating the conversation with one preferred topic
- Using gestures, facial expressions, and movements out of context in the conversation
- Not tracking with the discussion
- Not comprehending other points of view
- Not adapting well to transitions or changes in schedules or routines
- Exhibiting strong visual and auditory learning skills
- Reacting less or more strongly than others to sensory stimuli
